Small Steps

“That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.”
Neil Armstrong, as he placed the first footprint on the Moon.

This issue’s Small Step for Space:  Keep an eye on the upcoming spacewalks.

Right now, there’s a cooling problem on the space station.  Keep your thoughts and newsfeeds on the astronauts, and see how they solve it.  Sometimes all action is in someone else’s hands.

This issue’s Small Step for Space:  View the space shuttle.

At this point, NASA plans the final two space shuttle launches for Nov. 1, 2010, and Feb. 26th, 2011. While launch dates are always subject to change, it’s worth organizing a chance to see the machine that has capped our space technology for the last three decades, before it’s gone.

This issue’s Small Step for Space:  Know what value you want from space activities.

I take great value in seeing my species continue to explore, learn, and eventually, have more than one home.  You may be more interested in economic possibilities or the chance to travel into a new environment.  When you know the value you seek, you can make the efforts and support the policies that bring you that value.

This issue’s Small Step for Space:  Build a terrarium.

To travel beyond the atmosphere, we need sealed ecosystems that endure over time.  Watch a terrarium change over time, or perform some thought experiments, to begin envisioning the systems that can carry us beyond the atmosphere.

This issue’s Small Step for Space: Imagine you are taking a trip to Mars.  You’ll be in a very small space with a handful of other people for at least six months - maybe several years. What kind of people would you like to spend that much time with? What kind of conversations would you have?

Would your life be better if you started those conversations now? Then why not invite some of those people to your Yuri’s Night party?

Writing Tip

Many writers feel rewriting is where the magic happens. Try picking up a piece you’re unhappy with, and see what the do-over brings you.
